One More Time: A Quarantine Film Spreading Hope and Encouragement

A Handmade Approach to Connect and Inspire

COVID-19 has brought unprecedented challenges to communities worldwide, including those with special needs. In the midst of this global pandemic, designers Khoo Siew May and Jay Septimo created "One More Time," a heartwarming short film that aims to reduce feelings of isolation and spread positivity not just within the Superhero Me community, but to people around the world.

The inspiration behind "One More Time" was to foster a sense of togetherness and provide encouragement during the Singapore lockdown from April to June 2020. The film features narration by members of the Superhero Me community, who share their struggles with isolation from their own homes. Through their shared perspective of resilience, they aim to inspire everyone facing this global challenge.

What sets "One More Time" apart is its unique approach. The designers translated the script into a storyboard and opted for a hand-drawn visual style, using light colors to create a hopeful atmosphere. The film combines traditional and digital animation techniques to achieve a personal and warm aesthetic while working efficiently.

The process involved using Procreate for rough animation and Adobe Animate for refined animation. The designers then imported the animation into Photoshop to add natural media-looking brushes. Additionally, After Effects was used for certain 3D elements and compositing, resulting in a visually engaging and emotionally resonant film.

"One More Time" is a full HD film with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a frame rate of 24 frames per second. It was made to be shared on social media platforms such as Vimeo and Facebook, allowing it to reach a wide audience and spread its message of hope.

The project brought together a talented team, including directors Khoo Siew May and Jay Septimo, scriptwriter Jean Qingwen Loo, assistant animator Helgil Siega, and sound design and music composing by Sono Sanctus. The voices of the Superhero Me community, including Javier Yeo, Rinn Chan, Sun Meilan, Koh Jia Jin, and Joyce Teo, added a personal touch to the film.

"One More Time" was a collaborative effort spanning Singapore, the Philippines, and the US. The project began in May 2020 and was completed in August 2020, showcasing the dedication and creativity of the team involved.

This film stands as a testament to the power of art and design to bring people together, even in the most challenging of times. Its message of hope and resilience resonates with viewers, reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles. "One More Time" has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, earning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Movie, Video, and Animation Design category in 2021.

Through "One More Time," Khoo Siew May and Jay Septimo have created a heartfelt and inspiring film that reminds us of the importance of human connection and the power of positivity in the face of adversity. It serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging us all to persevere and come together, one more time.
